He is a musician of the Indian classics. His works are mainly an ode to the Indian tradition of Hindustani classical music. Rahul Sharma plays a musical instrument called santoor. The santoor is a kind of a hammered dulcimer. It has strings which are struck with a pair of mallets made of light carved wood. Generally in a santoor concert only one raga is performed. This is because with the change of a Raga, the dozens of strings need to be retuned.

The instrument has a harsh sound which did not go very rhythmic with folk music but Uma Dutt Sharma persisted on playing it. His son Shivkumar Sharma mastered the instrument very skillfully and became very popular in Kashmir. Soon he also became very famous all over India and the world. Rahul Sharma, his son, followed the footsteps of his father. He was into music from his very early ages.
In September of the year 2000, Rahul Sharma performed in the Real World Records which also featured the tabla player Ustad Shafat Ahmed Khan and the percussionist Pandit Bhawani Shankar. He has given his live performances in North America and Europe and in a number of Indian and International music festivals which also includes WOMAD. Besides Mountain Trail by Rahul Sharma, he has numerous other albums to his credit. The albums like Samandar, Ladakh, H2O, Interface, Time Traveller, Fusion and Maya have earned him tons of accolades from all over the globe. Also his musical albums like White, Parimahal, Kashmir and Jannat are also quite famous. He has even performed with world famous musicians like Richard Clayderman and Kersi Lord. He did his music directorial debut with the film Mujhse Dosti Karoge which earned him the 'Best Debut-Music Director' award in the year 2002 by Zee Bollywood. | | | |
