Hindustani music's two major vocal traditions are 'dhrupad', without any ornamentation and sombre in its delivery, and 'khayaal', with a romantic script and effusive ornamentation.

Kishoritai, one of the best of Hindustani vocal singing could tune her tanpura with a scientist's precision to the exact shade of nishad, and the correct shadja. It is said that her philosophy of music is her faith in its power to transcend the material world and touch the spiritual. Listeners find her notes divine and and their singing sacred. Kishoritai has given a lot of joy to her listeners by her music and lectures. She is an exponent of the Rasa Theory of Music.
Kesarbai Kerkar from Goa settled in Bombay and was honored with the title of Surashri by
Gurudev Ravindranath Tagore, the Padmabhushan, and title of Maharashtra Rajya Gayika by the government of Maharashtra. She was a excellent exponent of the Jaipur Gharana one of the best of Hindustani vocal.
Pandit Jasraj, is the unmatched doyen of Hindustani classical vocals. Born into a family which has given to Indian music four generations of outstanding musicians, the Mewati maestro, Pandit Jasraj had his initial grooming in music under his father, the late Motiramji. His spiritual guide was the late Maharana Shri Jaiwant Singhji of Sanand. Pandit Jasraj's greatest contribution to Indian music is the novel jugalbandi concept based on moorchanas.
